Yucatan Peninsula

The Yucatan Peninsula separates the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea and is composed of 3 Mexican states Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo. It’s has been a tourist hot spot for the past thirty years with Cancun being one of the main attractions in the region.

Cancun is world focus for tourism and more people come to this region than the rest of Mexico put together. Cancun in factearns twenty-five per cent of Mexico's tourist revenue.

The only drawback of the region is that it stands right in the path of hurricanes that sweep in from the Caribbean. During the hurricane season June-October, tourism comes to a screeching halt until the storms pass; again the tourists returns in full force by the end of November.

This Yucatan Peninsula was once controlled and inhabited by the Mayans and during the later centuries of the pre-Colombian era, it was mostly controlled by the Maya civilization which extended south and west from the Yucatan, down to Guatemala and into Honduras.

There are many Maya archaeological sites throughout the peninsula; including some of the best preserved such as Chichen-Itza, Tikal, Tulum and Uxmal. They were invaded by the Spanish and this was to be an area that would be occupied until the early 1900’s when it was finally incorporated into the Mexican government. It now makes up three of the thirty-one states that comprise Mexico as a country.

The Yucatan Peninsula is one of Mexico’s biggest tourist attractions and the population explosion here is proof of appeal. Tourists are not limited to those of the United States and Canada alone, tourists from all over the world flock over here to drink in the Mexican culture and enjoy the beauty of the landscape. Cancun has earned an impressive reputation and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the world.

The Yucatan Peninsula is now considered among the top tourist spots in the world and soaring numbers of tourists come to experience the incredible beaches of Mayan Riviera with its enticing Mayan ruins and the lush and warm tropical climate.

The beaches that are famous in the peninsula are Puerto Morelos, Playa car, Puerto Aventuras, Kantenah, Akumal, Tulum, Xcacel and Xpu-Ha. The cabins of the beaches of El Cuyo will give you a beautiful view of the nesting site of the pink flamingos. It is also one of the rare beaches where you can find the nesting of the hawksbill turtle. El Cuyo is not far from the city of Cancun.

Yucatan-Peninsula is considered to be one of the best archaeological zones of the ancient Meso-American world. Here you can find vestiges of Pre-historic culture. The more you explore this land, the more you will be enthralled by its greatness in cultural and science. The places that are famous for the ruins are Uxmal, Tulúm, Chichén-Itzá Edzná Chacmul, Cobá, Palenke, Cumal-calco and Bonampak. You will enjoy the experience because it’s still guarded by the heavy forestry and rough terrain.

Sites that are being restored are Ek-Balam, Uxmal, Chichen-Itza and Oxkintoc and people who work there or travel there feel a kind of presence which they are unable to explain. It is a thing that can only be experienced and cannot be described.

The sand beaches of Cancun have a reputation of its own with an unbelievable clearness of the water with different tones of blue. The dolphins that are found in this region are friendly and play with the tourists in a fashion that they have known them for a long time. The entrances to the longest under ground rivers are also situated here. They are being explored now and present a mystique that one is not able to explain.

The sky is covered with a pink that is possible only with a flock of flamingoes, the likes of which can be witnessed at Yucatan.

Other places of interest include the Cenotes in Chichen Itz and Cenotes of Sotuta and Dzibilchaltun. One can also visit the many ramparts and the bulwarks that are built around the city. This was built with an aim to keep out the plunders in the 16th and 17th century.
