Cork was first recognized because of the abbey, which led to the invasion of the Vikings and then later by the English in 1172. During the middle ages it became a significant trading town because of the big port. Cork has stayed a significant town and is now considered a hotspot of Ireland.

If you want to get out of the city for a little break then the town of Cobh is a lovely place to visit while you are nearby.
